Caine Prize alumni in the running for Commonwealth Writers' Prize
Two writers previously shortlisted for the Caine Prize and one participant in last year's Caine Prize workshop have been shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Africa's Best First Book. Gill Schierhout was shortlisted for the Caine Prize in 2008, while Alistair Morgan was among the five candidates in 2009. Aysha Harunna Attah attended the Ghana workshop organised by the Caine Prize in 2009.
The full shortlist in the Africa's Best First Book category is as follows:
- I Do Not Come to You by Chance by Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani (Nigeria)
- The Shape of Him by Gill Schierhout (South Africa)
- The Shadow of a Smile by Kachi Ozumba (Nigeria)
- Come Sunday by Isla Morley (South Africa)
- Sleepers Wake by Alistair Morgan (South Africa)
- Jelly Dog Days by Erica Emdon (South Africa)
- Harmattan Rain by Aysha Harunna Attah (Ghana)
Caine Prize organiser Nick Elam said, "We are delighted at the striking number of Caine Prize writers, known to us through their short stories, who feature on this excellent list of first novels."
